Westboro Baptist Church Announces Anti-Gay and Anti-Semitic Protests in San Diego Peaceful Rallies Being Organized in Response
SAN DIEGO- On October 2, the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) announced it will be protesting at several locations throughout San Diego County. The protests are scheduled to take place Friday October 16.
Founded in 1955 by controversial pastor Fred Phelps, members of the congregation commonly protest against homosexuality and often picket funerals of soldiers and those who have died of AIDS. The church’s most high-profile protest came at the 1998 funeral of Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student who was killed because he was gay. Congregants gathered outside the church held up signs saying “No Fags in Heaven” and “God Hates Fags.” Among the list of protest sites is San Diego High School. “WBC will be around and about because the local High School thinks it is soooo cool to be fags,” reports the WBC website. “And [they] no doubt just love Matthew Sheperd.” The church’s “Quit Telling Kids it’s OK to be Fags” demonstration will take place from 2:10 P.M. - 3:00 P.M.
Other WBC protests are are scheduled to take place that same day between 12 P.M. and 7:30 P.M. at six other locations throughout San Diego county. These locations include San Diego Jewish Publications (12:30 P.M - 1:00 P.M.), Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego (1:15 P.M. - 1:45 P.M.), United Jewish Federation of San Diego County (1:15 P.M. - 1:45 P.M.), Jewish Family Service of San Diego Turk Family Center (3:20 P.M. - 3:50 P.M.), Chabad at La Costa (5:30 P.M. - 6 P.M.), and the Congregation Dor Hadas (7 P.M. - 7:30 P.M.). While WBC members have protested at Jewish institutions over the years, such institutions were not a major focus for the group until April 2009. Since then, WBC has targeted dozens of Jewish institutions around the country, from Israeli consulates to synagogues to Jewish community centers.
“We feel there is no room for WBC’s message of hate in San Diego,” said SDGLN.COM Publisher Johnathan Hale. SDGLN.COM, the community’s next generation of GLBT news, will go live on October 23.
“Ordinarily this would be our lead story for a full week with extensive coverage. But because we have not yet launched we’ve opted to organize these peaceful response rallies instead. Please join us in sending a clear message that hate will not be tolerated in our city.”
Those wishing to participate in the response rallies should register at nohate.sdgln.com. A representative from SDGLN will be contacting each registered individual with further instructions. For more information on how to get involved email ben@sdgln.com.
Really? God & hate in the same sentence. I don’t know what kind of god you have but I’m pretty sure my God does not hate.
If you are outraged by this please repost to get the word out so everyone will know about these RIDICULOUS rallies & they can be stopped!
